Kirk was born in Virginia. His dad was an Air Force pilot, so the family moved frequently — to England, California, Nevada, and Alabama.  Kirk’s older brother was born-again while at college, and he shared the gospel with each member of the family. Kirk came to personal faith in Christ when he was 13 and was discipled first by the Navigators, and then by Campus Crusade for Christ.  He graduated from UC Riverside and went on to do graduate study at UC Berkeley, Princeton, and Tübingen (Germany). Kirk married his high school sweetheart, Laila, in 1975. Together, they have a daughter named Jenny, a son named Matt, and five grandchildren. After an early career in public relations and technical writing in San Francisco, God called Kirk to full-time ministry in 1990, shortly after a season of significant Holy Spirit renewal.  He has pastored churches in Thousand Oaks and Fallbrook, and has been senior pastor of Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church since 2008.
